So, You’ve Tried Matcha -Now What?
Share
If you’ve ever tried matcha, congrats! You’re already familiar with stone-milled (powdered) tea. What you might not know, is that matcha actually also has a bunch of stone-milled tea cousins; roasted, rice-blended, even black tea versions, and they all bring an entirely unique flavour to your cup (or baked goods)!
Here are some brews for for you to explore, in order from least to most caffeine:
HOJICHA
roasty | nutty | low caffeine
If you’re caffeine sensitive or just looking for something to sip in the evening, Hojicha is the tea for you. The tea leaves undergo a gentle roasting process to develop its signature flavour, but this also naturally removes almost all of the caffeine! Depending on the type of hojicha and how deeply the tea leaves are roasted, its taste can vary from delicate, roasted caramel notes to intensely chocolatey notes- perfect for a cozy night in or for infusing into rich baked goods.
GENMAICHA
toasty | comforting | medium-low caffeine
We like to think of Genmaicha as Matchas mellow younger sister. The formula is simple: Japanese green tea + roasted brown rice, and while it’s understandable if rice in tea sounds confusing to you, you’ve actually probably already had it! It’s very commonly served in Japanese restaurants as a straight tea, but our latte version ups the toasty, ricey flavour without compromising the green tea. It also has a slight creaminess- kind of like cereal milk! It contains less caffeine than matcha thanks to its rice content, but you can also mix matcha with genmaicha if you need the extra energy ;)
JASMINE
floral | soothing | medium caffeine
Jasmine tea is made by blending green tea leaves with fresh jasmine blossoms, which allows the leaves to slowly soak up the delicious fragrance over several rounds of scenting. The result is a naturally perfumed tea (absolutely NONE of that artificial floral taste you might be picturing) that also blends beautifully with other green teas (like matcha!). Our jasmine powder brings that same delicate, honeyed floral note to lattes and desserts alike -it's an easy favourite for anyone who wants something that tastes as naturally sweet and soothing as it smells.
EARL GREY
bold | aromatic | high caffeine
Earl Grey is always a classic, but it's surprisingly difficult to find in powdered form! Our Earl Grey tea powder packs a serious punch (no steeping needed!) and is perfect for elevating your earl grey cookies or cakes and avoiding bland, watery london fogs. Just prepare like you would a matcha latte or baked good and enjoy your richest tea treats yet!
OOLONG
smoky | roasty | highest caffeine
Trying to cut down on coffee? Meet your new best friend. Oolong is (to put it very simply) in between a green and a black tea. It can boast a variety of flavour profiles, but ours is particularly roasty and smoky. On top of that, it’s our most caffeinated tea, although you’ll still feel a much slower caffeine spike compared to coffee.
We hope this list helps you find your new cup of tea! As always, feel free to reach out via Instagram or email and we'll be happy to answer your questions. Happy brewing!
